We just had two hens delivered today and this one clearly has a birth (beak) defect. Has anyone had this before and will she live a normal life? She is supposed to be about 18 weeks but is clearly smaller than the others. Thoughts?

Who would have sold you a bird with such a severe defect? Chickens with cross beak will need to be fed food from a deep bowl, and may eat some fresh feed made wet with a lot of water. Sometimes slight trimming the beak with dog nail clipped to help shape it can be done. Some birds may have trouble getting enough nutrition, and may not be able to properly groom themselves without help. Here is some info about cross beak chickens:

I had one look almost like this (not as severe). The vet said she had broken her beak before or during transport. I have not been able to change it except for filing off a hook she had on it. She did survive and it did get to look somewhat better over the years. But again, she was not as severe as yours in the picture. The vet did mention that a specialist could probably correct it under anesthesia. very expensive though. And she thought success was definitely not guaranteed.
