Hi My 7 week old chicken got attacked by some roosters. I had separated it from the rest cause it was on the ground and weak after that. It seemed fine for the first two days, walking around even running from the dog, but would kind of fall to one side every now and again. Now i woke up today and it had stopped perching and was sprawled out on the ground. I took it out to get some sunlight and to eat some bugs and it just layed on its side. it's head keeps bending backwards and twisting around and it's eye are either closed or bugging out. At one point it started flopping around and flapping it's wings. I had another bird do this and just died right then, but this little girl is still hanging on and I don't know what to do!!! It can hold its head up but not for long it seems like it involuntarily starts to twist around. I don't want her to live with pain or uncomfort so PLEASE HElp!!!

    Hi :welcome

Glad you could join us here! Sorry to hear about the attack and your chicken being sick now. It sounds like wry/crook neck which is a neurological disorder. This can arise from either injury to the brain, vitamin deficiency or botulism. This can be treated but can take a while to get right again if at all. Here is a thread to check out ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/97121/lets-talk-wry-neck-crook-neck

    Also an article ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/wry-neck-causes-treatment-and-prevention

    Good luck with her :fl

Thanks so much for all the help. The chicken was flopping around and trying to flap it's wings and started screaming in pain, so I had to put it down. It didn't seem like it was going to get any better and it seems like it was in too much pain. I really appreciate the help. Hopefully this doesn't happen again and if it does I will read up more so I am prepared!

I'm very sorry to hear this :hugs

It sure can be a very distressing condition to watch. From what you have described it sounds the head injury developed after the attack.

I'm sorry you had to put her down. But I have never heard of one with wry neck, screaming. , she must have been badly injured.
