Hello! I have just started raising silkies this past year. I have a very obvious rooster and his sister who is the same age, has been crowing. I have posted several pictures, including one of her crowing. I am confused whether she is a dominant hen or a rooster.

Argument for possibly being a hen: Her comb and waddles are half the size of her brother’s and she doesn’t have spurs like him. The photo shows little nubs, but the roo’s are about an inch long.

Arguments for possibly being a roo: Her tail shape and daily crowing makes me think I’ve been fooled. She looks just like him, but crows a bit more quietly. Also, no eggs so far and she is one year old, but with my other two polish hens who lay small eggs, it’s hard to know if she’s laying or not.

Neutral: She is likes to attack me (but not my husband) and she gets along fine with her roo brother. What do you think? I appreciate your help!

Gah, I had a feeling! I’m going with the consensus. I bought 6 chicks off of a Facebook ad...all roosters. Fooled me once, and then MopMop fooled me twice. I might have to change his name to PopPop then I guess. Thank you for all!

I got two young silkies from a local breeder who is just starting from love of chickens, not because she knows what she's doing. She had no idea how to sex any of her chicks, and neither do we, so we just chose two that didn't look like they were developing a comb. For several weeks we kept the smaller one in a crate with some young pullets we got at Tractor Supply thinking "she" would be like an older sister and kinda protect them and show them the ropes. We named the bigger one Ursula and the smaller one Ariel. Well, after a while I started noticing a definite comb and then the the final identifier; "she" started crowing! So now we have a pair and have renamed him Aaron.
