what does a roosters crow actually mean?

"I am here! I'm The Man! This is my flock!"

They often crow in response to hearing another rooster, so they're announcing their presence to the "stranger" crow.

Roosters also use their crowing to call the ladies in at night... And the before-dawn crowing, I believe, is to greet the sun, to cheer its impending arrival.

If something disturbs them at night, a rooster will crow as a warning, again in the "something's wrong - I am here, this is my flock!" mode.

    That's what I believe, anyway.
