Cuckoo Marans pullet or roo?

Any guesses - approx 4 weeks old ... the only cuckoo that I have, the rest of my Marans are BC and are only 2 weeks old. This little chick is far flightier than my other 17 chicks and squawks up a storm when picked up...

Assuming that this one's a purebreed, definitely a pullet--a rooster would have far more white at this point, due to the presence of two copies of the barring/cuckoo gene (roosters carry two, hens only have one. Wide white stripes mean rooster, narrow ones mean pullet.)

Apparently sexed but we’ve had tons of bad luck with “sexed” birds in the past. Never owned anything but silkies so we are anxious to see how many of the Marans chicks cuckoo and BC turn out to be hens.

Most of my Marans show gender around 4 ish weeks pretty well as far as comb and waddles go (even color on the copper boys shoulders). That one has zero waddles. But the another clue/factor considered comes from the single verses double barring gene mentioned by the other poster, which is also my understanding and experience.

Usually 9 weeks for my Silkies. I breed/hatch/raise both.

Yes I have gotten a couple from the feed store that were 100% wrong sexed in 1 batch. My true overall average does stand around 10% though. So we always have some we wonder about too.
