Cut on Neck--Okay to Eat?

    Hey Y'all,

    Found one of our meat birds with a cut on its neck yesterday morning. The bird was acting perfectly fine and eating like a pig as usual.

    My fiance and I took it inside and washed off the blood and found this small cut. I'm assuming its from another bird stepping on it during the morning feeding rush. I don't think it could have been from an animal, but it's always a possibility.

    We stopped the bleeding with corn starch and then flushed it with betadine.

    Regardless of how the bird got injured, would the bird still be good to butcher and eat one it is fully healed?

    I can't see any reason it shouldn't. Several of my CX have cut themselves in the past prior to butcher and were just fine.

    All the birds I butcher have a cut on the neck [​IMG]. It's a lot more dramatic than that, though....

    Seriously, it will be fine. The only problem would be if the bird develops a systemic infection, I'd think twice about eating that.

    Cut seems to be scabbed over good. What would the symptoms of a systemic infection be?

    Redness at the site, pus, foul smelling drainage, the animal being ill---listless, not eating or drinking, things like that. Systemic infection is basically another way of saying blood poisoning.
