Today I found one of my leghorns dead in the run. I have no idea what happened to her. There was blood all over her rear end. She was already stiff when I found her but it didn't look like anything attacked her. If it was a fox or skunk I figure they would have eaten her. Our run is covered so I know it wasn't an owl. Does anybody have any ideas on what might have happened? She was only about 7 1/2 months old.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm sorry for the loss of your hen. Sometimes chickens just die for no apparent reason. Perhaps they are stressed or in shock by something unknown to the owner, or they may have some unseen internal injury, disease, or parasite. This type of death is often referred to in the chicken industry as "sudden death syndrome" or "flipover." The chicken lets out a last squawk, then flips onto its back and dies. I know its always sad to lose one of our flock. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with the remainder of your flock.

Maybe it was just 'flip' and the other birds pecking her ,after the fact, made her bloody. How sad.

Yes I have had some like that too. Apparently healthy chickens, fond dead for no apparent reason. It is pretty rare though.
