Found a dead hen this morning. They are right about 6 months old, Buff Orpingtons.. this is one I hatched myself. I had 26 hens and 5 roosters. I have had a hen laying double-yolkers half the time.. but I don't know if this is her. It is puffy around her vent, and right over the vent is bloody looking. Is this trauma? Disease? What was the cause of this? My chickens free range... she was dead in the barn.. totally cold this morning. I am leaving in a few days for my sisters wedding next weekend so if it's a disease I need to get on top of this ASAP. Thanks

I'm sorry about the loss of your chicken. My guess is that she was egg bound, which means that an egg could have gotten stuck in her vent or broken in her vent. New layers are at higher risk for the condition. If that is the cause of death, then you would not have to worry about the others catching anything from her.
