I had a friend share her knowledge about using the “deep litter” method in her chicken coop. I’ve been doing it as well and wondered if anyone else uses this method? Is it better for the chickens, or should I go back to my original method of cleaning the coop every week?

Deep liter in the coop and run. Excel tree service just dropped off a load of wood chips. :D That pile is 4.5’ tall 10’ wide at the bottom and at least 20’. We got wood chips for years, for free

True deep litter in a coop takes a bit of managing and may not work in all coops/environments. Honestly I've never given it a go, as my coop has a wood floor I do deep bedding and try to keep things as dry as possible. I clean out daily under the roosts and otherwise it gets cleaned out 2x a year.

Deep litter in a run is different. I have a mix of aged chunky wood chips, grass clippings, dried leaves, other garden trimmings, and just pile it in as I get materials or clean out the coop. Otherwise little to no maintenance there.
