Now that I have embarrassed myself posting this in the wrong spot We're new to the backyard chicken world and picked up our first few chooks over the weekend! We were told they were all pullets, but they were from a feed store and I'm questioning the accuracy the more research I'm doing, They are still young, but I was wondering I could get some thoughts from those more experienced than myself?

2 are RIR, 2 are Barred Rock(possibly Australorp cross?) and the last 2 little firecrackers are guinea fowl. The RIR are a little older than the others and I'm also wondering if I'm going to need to switch them to a separate bin before long? At this point they are all getting along fine and honestly, its the guineas that are the bossiest, despite being the smallest! Thank you in advance!

I suspect BR #1 is a cockeral, and I'm worried both of the RIR are as well. But my experience sexing chicks is all of 3 days of googling old. [IMG]

I don't see anything screaming cockerel, but it's really too early to say pullets for sure. You can post again when they're around 5-6 weeks old, at that time any males should be readily apparent.

Your barred Rocks are Rocks, not Australorps.

Thank you so much! I'll keeps my fingers crossed that they are all pullets. Their brooder was marked "Barred Rock and Barred Rock/Australorp" so that is good to know!

They modeled so nicely in this one highlighting the differences we are seeing in the Rocks. I assuming there is a slight age difference, but still...
