I bought a turkey last night at a poultry auction. They said it was a Tom. But it looks a lot like my hen. Could it be young? How do you tell a tom from a hen when they are young. I know dumb question!!!

Quote:Our turkeys are approx. 8wks old (I believe they are standard BB)and since 2 are struttin', my DH thinks they are toms. I've read here that hens will strut too but not as long. Anyway, 2 of the turkeys have redder heads as the third on is more bluish/gray. Also, how soon will they gobble?? My son says he heard one of them gobble. My DH and kids are turkey hunters and they got the gobbler out to 'talk' to them and that is when they fluff out. Neat to watch them!

well if they are bronze then the hens will have white lacing on the tips of the breast feathers and males do not.
