Hello All:)Yes another new person here, I just would like to get your thoughts as I am very new and inexperienced owner/raiser,and just found this great site a week ago and have done alot of reading. Unfortunately i went down to TS and placed an order before that,SOooooooo I hope the store guy steered me in the proper direction. I Got these with mainly egg production in mind the minimum was 25 So heres what I ordered:

    6 Rhode Reds
    3 Barred Rocks
    3 white Leghorns
    6 White Plymouth rocks
    6 Black Australorpes
and 1 Buff Orpington( My son picked that one cause he liked how it looked in the picture LOL)

Will these breeds be very good layers? do these breeds play well together? any coments or advice ?

    Thanks ,Tim

Hi fellow PA person! I think you did a fine job picking chicks out. You will have some white and brown eggs. The leghorns might be flighty. Buff Orps are great, you will love that one. Good luck with them! Sounds like a nice mix.

You picked some good ones. All of them have traits similar and different to each other.
RIR are great dependable layers of brown eggs, barred rocks lay well year round and are very friendly,White leghorns-can't beat them for laying large white eggs, and by the way,2 of mine went broody last year and 1 is broody now. They are fierce, loyal mothers.Austrolorpes lay large brown eggs, but we had a roo that was nasty, buff orps are sweeties. I don't know anything about the white plymouth rock, but I'm sure you did well there also.

[IMG] Barred Rocks are great layers. My hen lays jumbo sized eggs each day. Rhode Island Reds are also great egg layers, and really nice birds.

Hi! Welcome! And, well, are there really bad breeds??? J/K, yours sound very good. Did you order pullets or straight run? Steph

We have a couple barred rocks and they are excellent layers. I will also second the friendly RIRs. Our new RIRs from Ideal have the sweetest disposition.

Oh - and welcome to the addiction.

Thats a great bunch. As mentioned the leghorns will be flighty, but you'll get alot of eggs from all of them. Enjoy them and [IMG].

    First of all..........WELCOME TO BYC!
Now for your question......Orpingtons and the barred and white rocks are very good first time chicken owner birds. The RIR's are good too just not as calm. The leghorns are a bit more flighty(skidish) than the rest. Don't know much about the australorpes. Overall, I think you did pretty good..!
