i went out today, and when i bent down to pick up one of my black australorps, she kinda went down, but it was so fast i wasnt sure of it. So i waited then after a few minutes kind of touched her back again, and she bent down and had her wings slightly parted. It only lasted for a split second though. Is this the squat that people say is a close sign of egg-laying? Me and my dad are really hoping for some

That's it - congratulations! If you pet her back near her tail she'll raise her rear end up a little, then she'll get up and fluff and shake her feathers. Then in a couple of weeks or so she should begin to lay. But if it takes longer don't be alarmed - the days are getting shorter and egg production is liable to slow down. Chickens are fun!
