I recently brought home two new chicks to add to ones I'd hatched a week before. The new ones seemed to do fine and were only slightly smaller than the chicks I had. Today, nearly a week later, I found them dead. Does that seem weird? Could they have been sick, or are they more likely to have been trampled? I thought we were in good shape since we made it past their first week.

Was mostly likely cocci -- even after a week. You don't have to see bloody stools for it to be cocci. They might have just been weaker chicks (immune system-wise) than the chicks you hatched and couldn't handle the cocci levels in the environment. Sometimes the signs of fighting a cocci infection are as seemingly innocuous as them falling asleep standing up but rocking forward waking themselves up repeatedly. Whereas healthy chicks just slump down and sleep.

Sorry about those chickies.
