I received hatchery stock of roosters and hens. It's driving me nuts trying to figure out some of the breeds, although by now I've figured out all of the sexes except one. The black Sumatra is starting to look like a rooster but I'm not positive. One dilemma is figuring out what type of rooster I received. I know he's either a white Plymouth Rock or a white Marans. He's not aggressive towards humans but sticks up for himself against a vicious Delaware rooster. He likes to feather pick and peck at other chicks/chickens. Right now he's an adolescent, and is not overly concerned about mating like some of the other roosters, but likes perching with the hens. He has yellowish legs, is large, and has a large bright red, upright cone and wattles. We thought he was a large female for the longest time, and he's finally starting to develop a tail. He has a yellow beak not pointed downward, and beautiful bright white feathers, so we named him Bright. When I received the chicks there was nothing listed in the order, so I could only go by the variety I ordered and what they sell. Since I like a "definitive", "known", or "given" I'm going to go with the known breeds next time. Sexes don't matter as much, since there are only two of them. I appreciate any answers you all have regarding this issue. Thank you.

Marans should have white legs.
I'm with you, it would drive me crazy not knowing also!

It is easy to tell if you have a white, black copper, black maran. The maran will have feathered legs and feet well in place by 10 mos. If a bird doesn't have this they are not a maran. I purchased mine from a breeder of show lines and he educated me well. The white I bought is stark, pure white and the blacks are with some blue sheen in the sun, all have feathered legs and feet. He culls and sells those for instance a tail is pinched and not held correctly. My birds are 10mos for 3 of the soon to be hens and 3.5 months for the pullet. The show lines are a larger bird than those commercial lines you buy from hatcheries. I am getting avg 5 eggs a week from each and they are too big for the egg carton to close and dark with a 6-7 color. Hope this helps.
