What is the best way to save them?

  • let them free range and survive on their own? (Fills me with dread we don’t even do this now)

  • Make them a temporary shelter in a room in our house? (What if it floods and they are trapped?)

We live 3 miles inland and we are in direct line for the monster hurricane. I have 4 birds. They are limited free range and very tamed and affectionate.

Winds and flooding are likely.

What do I do with them if we have to evacuate (likely)?

I also have 3 children and I don’t really have the capacity to transport them.

Leave the children and take the chickens. You can make more kids. Kids are messy and they don't lay eggs. Seriously though, they are chickens. Leave them in the coop, secure the door open so they can roost. They will have plenty of water, and probably more than plenty of food brought in on the wind. If it gets bad enough to harm them i would imagine that you will have worse things to worry about than chickens. No matter how special or unique a chicken is, it can be replaced quite readily, much easier than a family member, and much cheaper than a roof.
