Hi everybody. I have 4 chicks...2 Black Australorps (2 weeks old), 1 Buff Orpington, and 1 Light Brahma (both 4 weeks old). I recently put some sod (dirt with the grass too) into their brooder last night. They enjoyed it and have been picking at the dirt and grass. I took the sod out of the brooder today after about 18 hours of exposure to the birds. I want to kee the birds exposed to the dirt and grass but I don't know how much to give them. Its only a small amount in the corner of the brooder. Can i constantly keep some dirt and grass in the brooder or should I monitor the birds' intake? I have also been giving them chick grit. Thanks.

As long as they are eating their chick crumble in normal amounts, they can have the dirt clod all the time. They would probably enjoy some ina small pan for dust bathing as well.

Okay thank you. They seem to be eating well and enjoying everything. I'll keep an eye on them and remove it need be.
