Dirt for Chicks

My 2-1/2 week chick has been on medicated feed and water with electrolytes and probiotics. Very healthy. I changed bedding yesterday from paper towels to dirt because he’s pecking/eating the paper towels.
2 Questions: 1) how often do I change out the dirt? 2) do I scoop out the poop?
I’m obviously new to all this but have learned sooo much from you all who’ve answered all my previous questions. Thank You!

I’ve always used pine shavings for bedding for my brooder and in the coop itself. With one single chick, they won’t soil it too quickly so once or twice a week, depending on how dirty it looks. But pine shavings would be a good way to go. It helps with smell, keeps things dry, and if you use the bigger shavings, they are less likely to try and eat it.

I also use pine shaving and then when I clean out the brooder or coop, I put the pine shavings with the chicken poop into the compost bin.
