Disaster Themed Hatchalong and guess the hatch rate on scrambled shipped eggs

Officially day 16: one over achiever home egg hatched, others pipped. Shipped eggs lagging behind as expected, 5/8 pipped though. This morning all home eggs had pipped but only 1 shipped egg had, so they are making progress. Good thing the only chick isn’t a squawker, the incubators are in my son’s room and he needs sleep! I did get the brooder going, left the house, came home and the bulb had burned out, happily no chicks in it yet!

May I present Earthquake Fitzgerald and his as yet unnamed overachiever companion:

Achiever hatched yesterday from the home eggs, quail shouldn’t be in the incubator much longer than a day but he had no Buddy so I left him thinking another would hatch. Well it did, just not from the home eggs. I wanted to check shipped pips but all my eggs were askew, apparently Earthquake was playing soccer, hence the double name. They are both yellow, so I thought I’d band earthquake as a ginger, but he could just slip it off with ease. He’s obviously red/orange undertones while the other is black, probably Italian, so at least easy to tell apart. Pips are progressing in both incubators, I might have 7 chicks after breakfast, I’ll keep you posted, meanwhile achiever is trying to eat his own toes and flips himself over backwards, usually they grab other chicks, but as an only child he has to be creative!

:frow hello Earthquake Fitzgerald! Already causing more disasters are you? 😁 They are cute! Keep going little quail! :jumpy

Happy Thanksgiving!

Between snow, holiday and company I’m glad these chicks hatch themselves, mid day 17, normal hatch day for coturnix quail. One egg left…a shipped egg that is pipped and making scratchy noises so still alive! This has been an odd hatch, the incubators are competing, one home egg hatches early (late day 15) so does a shipped egg, then one each midaftErnoon yesterday then 3 each overnight with a single late egg each, home egg finally hatched but still waiting on the last shipped. I had two unpipped shipped eggs, candled again one was a dark shell I couldn’t be sure on but finally pulled (day 2 quitter) and the other was pretty fluidy, a dead day 12. One of the shipped chicks is a mutant: buggy eyes, bulgy head, head tilt, possible funky leg, will probably cull. 6/7 on home eggs (one early quitter). For shipped eggs we have 6 early quitters, one mutant, one late quitter, four healthy chicks and one yet to hatch out of 12 viable eggs. And they are all yellow or red, glad I separated them or I’d not know what it what. Will update with pics and last egg.
