Hi I have a chicken, it is a rescue that we have had for about 3 years. A few weeks ago it became very ill, the comb was deep purple almost blAck. I read that this is a sign of heart problems. Her droppings were green. Since then her comb is now almost back to normal colour but she appears to be blind / partially blind. She is also very disorientated, pecking and missing food, she is also trying to preen herself but is just pecking into mid air. It's very distressing to watch, although i don't know if she is suffering. She follows the other chickens to get food in the feeder but when she is going for veg/fruit on the ground she can't manage it.

She is spending a lot of time just sitting very still with her neck in and she appears puffed up.

Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks Alison

You should ask about her in our emergency area. https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures Be sure that she is drinking. If she isn't then you'll have to use a syringe and squirt it down her throat.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your girl, X2 on post in the Emergencies forum Mountain Peeps linked for you.

Welcome to BYC! I'm sorry to hear about your chicken's health struggles. Mountain Peeps has given you the link to go to for problems of this nature. I hope your chicken gets well soon. Good luck.

Sounds like she had a stroke of some sort and yes the eyes can go or be diminished from a stroke ....

Keep up her vitamins and a great source is a hard boiled egg and that some times can help in returning proper color to the comb ....

Thank you everyone. Can I copy the text and add to the emergency forum or do I need to retype it?

We have treated the hen house today for mite, not sure if the two are related.

Always such a worry when one of our chickens isn't doing well. Hope to read about her progress in the emergencies thread.
