my one blue silkie is adorable, and we hope she is a girl, but she raises her hackles when we pick her up! does anyone know if this only happens with roos?[IMG]

My hen does when she's feeling especially irritated or is trying to intimmidate another bird. It's a 'chicken thing'. Not just males do it. Though it is more common among roosters.

Both females and males raise their neck feathers. Often a female does it to intimidate, to soak up light or heat, or other reasons. . .
