    Does anyone know the Inuit or Native Alaskan name for "Big Dog/s"?

    I know this is probably a little off topic, BUT my hubby swears he heard the word before and he really liked it. We are starting up our kennel and trying to remember this name to incorporate into the name of our kennel and farm. We raise Giant Alaskan Malamutes so that was the main reason for wanting the name.
    He thinks he heard it in the either the "snow dogs" movie or "8 below". Any help would be much appreciated...Thank you, Stephanie

    I will be posting this on a few of the other forums too.

    Others that came up (that IMO are not as nice) were:

    dog - kringmerk
    dog (plays) v - unayok
    dog (leader dog) - issorartuyok

    big (is) - angiyok, takiyok

    I’m
    not sure how their language is used - but it seems that they get to the point!

    When I lived on Kodiak Island I asked one of my bartenders (who's hubby was native) if she could find out how to write and say "Yellow Dog" & "Black Dog" in case I wanted to use those names for when my Yellow Lab had puppies. I mated her with a Choc Lab hoping to get all 3 colors but all 7 puppies were born Black. She had it written down for me but I don't remember where I put it now.

    I named my yellow lab "Tundra" and my black lab/husky mix is "Denali". Although my yellow labs full AKC name is "Parker Critters Alaskan Tundra"

    Living in Wasilla you should be able to find a native there to find out how it is spelled.

    Good Luck, I sure miss Alaska!!!!!

    I don't know any names that are specifically dog names but here are some Alaskan native words that are mostly Tlinget based and make good doggie names

    Taku=a harbor, a river, a glacier and a wind have this name
    Chilkat=a river, a valley and a people have this name
    Chilkoot=another river
    Stikene=a river and a region, John Muir named his dog this
    Keta=a salmon species often called dog salmon
    Dyea= where the Chilkoot trail started
    Yukon
    Kushtaka=a half human/half otter monster

    Can' think of any more right now.
