My father told me that he didnt think chickens were chickens if they werent white like the ones his Grandpa had. Then I thought in my head White Orpingtons, White Leghorns,White Rocks, White Silkies, White Wyandottes, White Jersey Giant etc. Does this make you mad? It does me for some reason.

A rather odd view point yes but no, doesn't make me mad! Does he eat brown eggs from "fake" chickens or only white eggs from "real" chickens?!

Not really. It is like someone saying a dog isn't a Real dog if it isn't a certain size or something. It is how your dad grew up, and to him, in his mind chickens were always white - 'cause that is what they had. I would get some white 'real' chickens in the mix for your dad - and one day you will think of this with a fond memory, and probably always have at least One white chicken in your flock. I know I would if my dad felt that way; out of respect and love for him - 'cause I think my dad is the greatest and I always want him to be happy. It would be a small thing that could very well mean a lot, to the both of you.

What does he think they are? I'd tell him the hatcheries would be very interested in his views because they think they are chickens and perhaps he would like to correct them. There is no accounting for the ideas that people get in their heads. I once met a woman who thinks that ducks and geese are not birds. They are ducks and geese. My uncle was convinced we imported all our milk form Japan and nothing would change his mind.

Maybe White eggs from a "fake" chicken. Brown Leghorn's lay a White egg and used in the egg laying world.

Well said, Sequin. I am sure your dad is proud to have you as his child. I agree with you. I didn't take the dad's comment as an insult to other breeds. And I certainly doubt he was looking at a non-white chicken and said emphatically and literally, "That is not a chicken." Obviously, his grandpa's white chickens were the only chickens he ever knew, so that's how he thinks of a chicken. No big deal. I am sure I have said dozens of things like that based on either my experiences or my preferences. "To me, a hot dog just isn't a hot dog unless its a Ballpark." as one of many possible examples (Please, nobody post, "Well, what do you think a hot dog is, a hamburger?" Or, "I'm sure Gwaltney would be very interested in your opinion of their non-hotdogs because they think they're hotdogs." yada yada yada).

Good for you for suggesting BarredBuff add a few white chickens to her/his flock in honor of her/his father. Blessed are the peacemakers.

He probably just means that if they aren't white, they are just not his kind of chickens. He grew up with white chickens and relates that to what a chicken should look like.

my grandpa and great grandpa make fun of my chickens because they think they are wuss chickens. but any barred chicken is a "Bard Rock" and any red chicken is a "Red" to them. that is the only two chickens that they know, so i guess that is just them. my dad thinks every chicken is an RIR red or buff. my mom just stays away from them. its just how you were raise we all are going to be cool grandparents, parents, and great grandparents since all of us know the different chicken breeds
