My chicken has a bad cut on its neck from my stupid dog. She is walking but not very well. She is now laying in one of the laying boxes. What should I do? Try and dress the wound or let time be the cure??

I've had some chickens attacked pretty badly by dogs and one hen almost lost her whole neck to some critter that I'm sure wasn't a dog and I didn't think would survive but she did. I've used saline solution to cleanse wounds. I've used triple antibiotic ointment on the wounds. They heal up pretty fast considering how bad they can look. Two hens attacked by the dog has maggots and called a vet and asked him what I could do though I knew he wouldn't see chickens and shouldn't give out that information but he did tell me to use Adam's Flea and Tick spray and it worked very well.

I would isolate your Silkie away from the other birds, as chickens have a tendency to peck at and even killed the injured. Put her in a warm, clean place, and try not to stress her out too much. I would put some antibiotic ointment on the wound (just don't use any ointment that contains "caine" ingredients--those are bad for poultry), and leave her alone. Try to keep the wound clean, as you don't want it to become infected. If you start to notice signs of infection (bad smell, oozing pus, etc.), antibiotic treatment might be necessary.

However, don't worry too much about your bird. Chickens have a remarkable ability to heal from gruesome wounds.
