Just a quick question on what we should do. My lab started coughing, gagging, vomiting, and having trouble swallowing about 30 min. ago. She has thrown up twice, and has currently been outside eating grass for the past 10 minutes. She is breathing and eating fine, just the coughing. We have given her some bread, and she drank for a bit too. I'm pretty sure she probably has something stuck in her throat but the vet is closed for tonight. Is there anything thing else we can do to help her dislodge whatever is in there? She is current on heartworm medication and kennel cough.

Is there an Emergency Vet in your area? If you call you vet, they may have a phone number on their recording for an after hours vet you may call. Even if you don't rush your dog right in, they may ask important questions/make important suggestions.

When my lab was a puppy, he ate some wild mushrooms. He became lethargic and started to salivate like crazy. If I hadn't rushed him to the emergency vet, he would have died for sure. He was there for days.

    Good luck.

  4. sounds like something caught in her throat certainly. If she continues much longer and cant get it dislodged I think I would go ahead and try to find one of those emergency vets open all night if there is one anywhere close. The problem is that she may get so worn out from coughing that she lays down and then aspirates whatever it is and makes things worse.

could still be canine cough, deep hacking cough, often accoumpanied by white frothy phlem.

It seems like the grass/straw/stick eating has settled it a bit. She has stopped gagging and coughing, and just is swallowing hard every couple minutes. She must have got it unstuck and now we are just waiting for her to vomit.

My dog was doing the same thing for the last six months I spent 1500.00 at the vet they told me it was heart problems. I knew it wasn't, it turned out it was the hardwood floor cleaners and Mr clean floor cleaners.
I moped the floors with plain water two weeks ago and he has not coughed once. the vet had me believing he was going to need all of this treatment. all I needed was clean water.

My dog was just doing this for 30 mins. Occasionally vomiting but clearly just because he was coughing so hard. I knew it wasn't serious but it was irritating him and he refused to drink or eat anything to help it go down so I gave him a spoonful of honey and it worked instantly. He immediately started drinking and eating after it. Now he's all better!
