My landlords stupid dog got my lovely girl Lorelei. She must have found a way out and back into the pen. We got home and I told my husband to go check on the birds while I put the baby down. He came back and said they were all there but the neighbor kids told him that one of the dogs ate one of our chickens....

I took a flashlight out and found Lorelei on the floor of the coop with a big chunk taken out of her back end. Blood all around her. It was such a big chunk I didn't know what to do.... I panicked and told my husband to put her down. I wish I had looked into what I could do but I panicked. I have no idea how extensive her injuries were but she had very raspy breathing and was very pale. I couldn't bare seeing her suffer.

I'm a little traumatized here. Lorelei was my girl. She was the only one that came and sat in my lap and came running so quick every time I came into the pen.

I've lost one to sour crop, one to a dog attack now.... what is happening here? How is this all going so wrong? Wondering if this was a mistake.... getting these birds.

I'm sorry you lost your Lorelei, sometimes it seems it's always the favorite bird that is lost.

Beef up the security of your coop. The next time you have an injured or sick bird, go to the emergency forum and ask for help.

There are things that can be done to keep our birds healthy and safe...sometimes we lose them anyway. Learn from your losses. As long as you are still getting some enjoyment out of your flock, having them isn't a mistake.

I am so sorry you lost your girl. It is hard to take when this happens. I lost my beautiful Wyandotte and I felt like a horrible chicken Mom. You can find so much help and good advice on this website.... I wish you the best with your chickens in the future.

Thank you all so much. It's strange not seeing her in the coop now but it was a push to take the final steps in securing the pen to make sure no more accidents like this occur. I keep asking myself if I should have tried to save her but I didn't have the materials or knowledge and my husband told me if I had let it go she could have quickly gotten an infection from how deep the wound was and then would have suffered worse. I hope he's right.
