Door for coop on fully enclosed living quarters????

Hello yall. I have a question my chicken coop in fully enclosed with chicken wire from all sides. Do I need to have a door into entrance into coop itself? Or should they be okay?

If your run is fully secure and predator-proof it's just possible to go without a door between the coop and run. In fact, if you live in a hot climate you can go without a wall between the coop and run and have an open air coop.

Chicken wire is not really predator proof. So you should close the door at night, or, ideally cover the chicken wire with 1/2" hardware cloth.

Hello thanks for your reply. I’ve attached some photos of inside of run it’s fully enclosed with wire top and bottom. I guess my main concern is I plan to have the roosting area closer to the entry way. Planning on putting nesting area in the back.

I can see better now and since you've got chicken wire rather than hardware cloth the run is not predator-proof so you'll need a secure place for the night at least.

Unfortunately, dogs and raccoons rip right through chicken wire.

Dont have a door for entry itself into coop. Just for me to get into the run. I live in the city. So outside of cats I’m not sure what predators we would encounter

Dogs aren’t a worry surrounding backyards don’t have any that would cause harm. Just smaller dogs. I didn’t think of raccoons though. Typically don’t see them or signs of them in my neighborhood. But I will look into the hardware cloth! I’ve been seeing ads all over the place for automatic ones. Where you can control times on phone. I leave for work around 2-3am so having a conventional door isn’t the best option.

Cities have more predators than you think. Dogs, raccoons, rats, even coyotes but different areas have different risks.

I leave for work around 2-3am so having a conventional door isn’t the best option.

If your run is predator-proofed then not having a pop door to worry about is definitely going to be best for your situation.

With my in-town flock and the attached run on the coop I never closed my pop door and treated the whole thing as one system.

Raccoons are everywhere, even in cities. I have my run enclosed with hardware cloth, and I do leave the door to the coop open. Then I don't have to get up at the crack of dawn, or rush home before sunset. It's worth it.

I live in Northern California in the Bay Area
