I have had ducks and chickens for just over a year now, I noticed about 5 days ago that one of our drakes penis was stuck out, I had never seen this before and assumed that it would go back in, I have now started to read different articles about it as it is still stuck out, I have bathed it and put antiseptic on it but it looks like I am too late to save the penis as it is nearly all black. All of our ducks are pets but by the sounds of it the vet bill is very expensive to remove the penis and I really don't think I could do it myself as I am scared I would either hurt it or donut wrong and maybe kill it. I am still going to continue to bathe it and maybe try to apply Vaseline as I hear it can help with the dead tissue. I have also separated it from the other ducks and given it fresh bedding. Is there anything else I can or should be doing. Help please... Kayla. :/

I would really try to get the duck in to the vet at this point. This is a very serious condition that can not be put off due to the risks. At this point the dead skin will have to be removed. Some people on here have removed it on their own while others have had a vet do the procedure.

I know I wish I had asked sooner as I may have been able to have saved all this happening. I will be calling the vet after the weekend and hopefully it won't be too pricy as I really don't think I could do it myself. I have read that some people have just kept cleaning it an the dead skin has come off to reveal pink skin underneath, do you think it is too late for that? Thank you for the advice.

It could end up doing that but I'd be afraid the longer the dead part was attached the farther it would end up spreading up the penis.

Yes it already seems to be pretty far up, il have to have another look tomorrow as the tip looked pink when I last looked. I think maybe the best thing to do would be to just take it to the vet and not think about the cost haha thanks again.

    Marty1876 Hi Everyone!

    Kayla,

How unfortunate for your duck! He must have injured it somehow. You have done the right thing in giving him his own space. Be carefull that the bedding won't further aggrivate his injuries. Maybe you'll want just a piece of cardboard.

I wouldn't use vasoline, as this will lock in the bacteria that are allready damaging him. I would instead use neosprin cream not ointment. In the morning, make a 25% solutionn of hydrogen peroxide with 75% boiled and cooled water. (this stearilizes it) Put it into a meticulously clean container like a glass cup, and go dip mr. ducks winky in it. Then, put on the neosporin cream. If you possibly can, take a pic.

Was there any sign of physical injury? Has he gotten somthing wrapped around it? Did he cut it or a snake bit it? You must be a detective here, to find out the cause if you possibly can. He may have gotten it twisted up during mating, and literally damaged the cartilage.

Is he still eating and drinking nomal? Does he stand and breath hard, but not move much? This is important, becasue if the infection has moved up, he may die. If its solely limited to the extremity, he will probobly live either way.

Thank you I would have used Vaseline if you hadn't have said otherwise, I will try exactly as you said, and change the bedding tomorrow as it is in sawdust at the moment. Well I introduced it to two new females and it was the day after that I noticed it so I'm thinking maybe it has done it whilst trying to mate. It didn't seem to be bleeding or cut as far as I could see but I will have another look tomorrow (as I live in England and it is nearly 5am) he seems to be eating drinking and standing normal and when I put him in the warm water to bathe he was looking very happy really.

Yes I think that would be so much better but it isn't soft skin anymore, it looks more like dead skin so I don't think it will be possible :(
