I have 1 mallard and 3 Pekin ducks, all females. Today I went out to the coop and a egg was in the middle of the ground. I go back to the house and got my bucket to collect eggs with and when I came back my mallard had moved the egg. She was sitting on it and putting sticks around her! The eggs aren't fertile but can she still go broody?

When the broody instinct hits, hens (both chicken and duck) will set on anything resembling an egg - even on an empty nest. A male is not needed for hens to go broody.
