    Our first duckling hatched today -- just a couple of hours ago and we think it was premature because we can see some of the yolk sac. In addition to this, the duckling can't walk. It is trying very hard to walk, but keeps tipping over. I have read about splayed legs, but am not convinced it is this -- though certainly possible. It appears as if one leg is working and the other is not. Any suggestions on how I can help it?

    Thanks so much for any advice you can offer. I want this little duckling to make it!!!!

    I once had a chick that couldn't extend its leg, it had a really hard time getting to the food or water. It died a month later we think from starvation. Make sure this little guy can get to food and water. If this came from being born premature i'm not really sure what else you can do.

    @IzzyDuckling

    I am not a hatcher, but I have been told that it can take hours after hatching for a duckling to catch its breath and gain some strength.

    I also know that some ducklings seem to have B vitamin deficiency at hatch (there just wasn't enough in the yolk for some reason, maybe). So adding a B complex vitamin to water (using the amount of niacin in the B complex to gauge how much water to add - 100 to 150 mg niacin per gallon of drinking water) is one way to quickly boost the vitamins and help the little one.

    Feel free to post over on the Duck Forum if you have not yet.

    I am trying to catch up a bit on BYC before turning in.

    Excited to report that nothing at all was wrong with the duckling. I just didn't know what to expect as this is my first experience with hatching. He is walking, running, jumping, swimming and appears to be in great health. :)[IMG]
