Okay - gangrene will set in if the wound does not get enough air.

Do not cover the wound, and if the ointment is like petroleum jelly it won't let in enough air. Switch to a cream, or just rinse the wound with saline solution or Vetericyn - the wound needs air.

Also - get an oral antibiotic - duramycin may be the way to go.

I think that the duckling needs to be in warmish - 80F - water, floating, swimming, for ten or fifteen minutes at a time several times a day. This should stimulate circulation and bring more oxygen to the wound. The wound needs oxygen very badly right now.

If a good duck vet can be found, that would be good. I just try to remember to state that especially for others who read these posts. If one cannot be found, we do the best we can.

Another thought - rinse with mild Epsom salt solution once a day, in addition to the plain saline solution several times a day.

added - don't put anything more on the wound - keep it open, rinse it often.

i have not been able to find a vet, i even took him to the vet i take my dog to, they turned me away saying they dont do ducks...gave me the phone # i already called for wildlife place

They are having a good time in the warm sink, i think ducks in the sink is worse Then dog in the tub....i have water everywhere! Boy were they dirty! next time they are going in the tub

May I just suggest cream rather than ointment? Yeah, I am a little cautious. None of my earlier suggestions would be any kind of problem, gangrene or not.
