duckling got leg stuck in weeds ripped its skin off

Actually he looks, in the pictures, like he may do o.k. Keep cleaning and using antibiotic ointment/lotion. Keep him pretty much inactive until it looks like it is healing.

As for the other ducks. If you have a 6 ft deep 1 acre pond that is going to make getting them in a bit more difficult. You will not be able to wade across the pond obviously so will need some sort of small shallow bottomed boat. Do you have, or know anyone that has, a small bass boat? That would work perfectly. Again, what you want to do is calmly guide them in the direction you want to go.

If your pond is 6 feet deep and has significant weed growth that is going to be something you want to address. I know that there are fish that will eat weeds of some types but you will need to contact your local authorities about what types they are if you decide to go that way. Also, dredging would help but that can be pretty expensive.

If there are turtles, and you indicated there are, then all your ducks are at risk. Turtles will come up under a duck and rip its stomach open, they have been known to actually bite off the legs of waterfowl. So either keeping your birds out/off of the pond or eliminating the turtles is going to have to become a priority for you. You might Google controlling turtles or contact a local vermin control company for help in how to do that.

You got the ducks initially for weed and bug control on your pond is what you seem to indicate in an earlier posting. If they are going to no longer have the protection from predators that the pond affords then you will need to assure they have safe and secure shelter and protected space in which to live and forage.

I hope to see an update posting later this a.m. that indicates the little one is doing better or at least not worse. Best of luck.

How is the little thing doing this morning? I'm almost thinking that a turtle may of taken a bite out him/her. Did you see him get stuck on the reeds or just after? It seems to be a clean cut wound.

I heads the baby crying and when I got there he was trying to fly out. I untangled him from the weeds, I have only seen small paint turtles. He was tangled in the grass the has sharp edges. I just cuts from the rescue.

Can't tell for sure, but it looks alot better to me. Lets hope for no infection and a speedy recovery!
