    Hello All,
I have a duckling in the first stages of hatching and has just began to pip at the shell. The only reason I saw this is because I went to candle the egg for signs of life i noticed the shell broken a bit on the bottom. Should I let the duckling hatch this way witH the egg oriented with the pip down, or should I turn the egg so the pip is facing upwards. Please respond as soon as you can... thank u

I would give it half a turn so it is pointed the right way.

Waterfowl eggs should be hatched on their sides ideally. For this reason "developing upside down" and others.

So this is relatively normal for waterfowl then?

Not so much "normal" as it is common.

I have a concern. I have a muscovy duck that just hatched 11 babies fine over the course of the last 2 days. The last one hatched over 24 hrs ago. She still had 2 eggs and I figured they were bad but when I checked last night one had a crack in the shell so I put it back. I just went and checked and there was no progress so I took it out and listened and heard nothing so I pulled off part of the shell and all of a sudden it started chirping and pecking inside but not where I had pulled off the shell. I tried to put it back under her just how I found it but I'm not sure if he is stuck or not. There is no hole through the membrane. Any advice?

I'd let it be for today and check it tonight. Unless she comes off the nest with the others and leaves the egg. Then I'd take it and hatch it myself, might make it may not. At least you tried.

He made it! I brought him in last night and started opening the shell. He was all cobbled up the wrong way. Once I freed his wing he popped right out.[IMG]
