hi, I have two ducks and this is my first winter having them. is there anything special that I need to do? I have spoken with people at our local poultry farm and she said that ducks are easy to care for in the winter and don't need much attention except to make sure their water bowl doesn't freeze. they sleep in an enclosed house at night and have a closed in coop to walk around in during the day. do they get cold at night? any suggestions would be appreciated. thank you

They will be fine if they have that house to go into at night and shelter in the day.. they love to walk about on the frozen pond and its funny to watch they slipping all over the place.

So, really they just need a dry draught free shelter available 24 / 7. OH, and some extra feed.... as they will burn up more calories in the winter.

hi thanks for replying. their outside coop is wood and chicken wire so it is not 100% draught free. I am planning on putting some type of a tarp on the top before it snows so at least the top will be somewhat enclosed. I am glad you mentioned the extra feed. I usually do not put any feed in their house at night, do I need to put some in during the winter months? I have heard that it attracts rodents if you leave food in their homes. I had some rodent issues already and never left food out at night so I don't know where they are coming from or why...

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm a chicken person and don't know much about ducks (although I've had a few), but I have to admit that ducklings are the ultimate in cute. Definitely post on our duck link that TwoCrows left you with, and take advantage of our duck experts there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your ducks.
