Duck's nail fell off, toe bleeding.

I noticed a few drops of blood around my duck pen and discovered that one of my ducks has lost her back toe nail. I actually found the nail by chance, and it does look like the whole thing has fallen off. Her toe is bloody, but it doesn't seem that she's losing a ton of blood, although I guess I don't know what a lot is in this situation. Like I said, a few drops here and there.

I'm not sure how this happened. My best guess is that it's frostbite related. I've had some problems with the duck's feet this winter. The nail was slightly dark at the base, which might be a sign? They have access to a heated house with straw and a spacious pen bedded with leaves, so I'm doing all I can to prevent the frostbite issue, however there is still a bit of it.

I'm wondering if this will just heal up and she'll be ok, or if I have to do something. Is cleaning it and putting ointment on it useless, since it will just be dirty again right away? But, if I don't do anything, is it likely to get infected? What should I do? Also, will the nail grow back?

Thanks!
Melissa

I wouod pen the bird up alone and keep putting iodine on the toe to stop the bleeding
by her being out in winter type weather she is agrevating the toe

It would be a good idea to separate her for a little while. It will keep her away from other animals who would get excited by the blood.

Doing some cleaning to the wound would help, at least for the first day as a preventative and to give the wound time to form a scab. Maybe you could at least flush it with a saline solution?

Hope she heals up quickly!

Thanks for the good advice. I didn't end up doing anything last night, and this morning there was no bleeding or blood anywhere, so that's good. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it in case it starts again, but so far, so good!

My chickens rip their toe nails off all the time put some healing cream over the toe to stop the bleeding and it should be fine by next week.
