Okay, I think I have most of my 9-week-old chicks figured out, and up until recently I was fairly confident I had four boys and four girls. But Cookie here has me wondering. Her comb is larger and redder than her 'sisters' - but I wound up with kind of a mixed bag of chicks, and it's possible she's just a bit older or just a different mix of breeds, since she's different in a few other ways, too, and she's a bit larger than the obvious girls. She also has some shiny tail feathers that are looking awfully greenish, and that has me raising an eyebrow to her as well.

But she's very feminine looking over all, to me at least. She has such lovely eyes and doesn't have that vulturish look that my boys seem to have. Any thoughts? Here are some pictures:

Does this headgear seem too pink for a 9-10 week old pullet?

Girlish colour pattern? Or are those manly red patches starting on her wings?

Greenish tail feathers (they look much greener in the sun, but the sun rarely exists in Ontario this summer, so I wasn't able to get a good picture of them today.)

    Thanks!

Despite the color, I'd vote boy at 9-10 weeks too with that comb/wattle, odd comb shape also, will be interesting to see what Cookie turns out to be.

The pointy feathers across the saddle and back of the neck say cockrel to me.

  4. The feathers make me think that it's a cockerel.

You are right. I blew the picture up and that is a butter up comb.

Well, gee, that's looking pretty unanimous, doesn't it? I guess I'm up to 5 roosters, 3 hens. Oh, well.

Buttercup, eh? Interesting. We had certainly noticed that he/she had a weird comb, but I just figured it was a messed up pea comb. You learn something new every day.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback, everybody!

I have a sicilian buttercup hen so that's how I knew about the breed..
Yours is different with coloring and has a larger comb so that's what told em probably rooster.
