I had a dozen eggs shipped, difficult to get any here in a regional town in Australia, I put six under a broody Cochin and the rest in the incubator. There were six eggs under the hen this morning and only five tonight, there was evidence of broken egg in the nest, would she eat one if it was not developing. I candled the rest and only 2 had signs of development, should I remove the others that aren't developing it is only day 5?

Hens do sometimes eat the eggs they are incubating.....sometimes one, sometimes more. they MAY know which ones are fertile.

Personally I would not throw out eggs at day 5 as it is rather too early to be sure about viability. may be best to keep them fro a further couple of days and candle again,

It could have broken in the normal course of her rotating the eggs, and she was merely in the right place at the right time for a tasty snack.
