Eating Chickens' First eggs

I was wondering about eating my pullets first eggs.....only because my Mom told me not to and when I asked why she said growing up on the farm Grandma always said not to eat the first eggs and would give them to the hogs.

I don't get it, I mean they are just small normal eggs aren't they? First eggs can't make you sick can they?
Nope, they're usually fine. old wives tales persist in strange ways.

Thanks. Maybe you can answer another question......Is it ok to eat eggs from pullets on medicated starter feed? All pullets have been integrated into the run,but I have lots of starter feed left and it says to feed it until they are so old on the bag, yet my older hen and my older pullet prefer the starter to the laying feed.

I feed Purina medicated starter crumbles, and Purina laying crumbles.

I believe so, most people only feed medicated started until the end of that bag, then switch to normal starter. They can be switched to layer feed if they're laying ironing a layer/starter mix.

They're just fine.

When I have a batch of pullets starting to lay I usually seem to end up collecting them, hard-boiling them, then making mini, one-bite deviled eggs.

A woman I know likes pullet eggs and bantam eggs for pickled eggs since they go so nicely into the jars.

It should say on the bag of feed whether it's ok or not. :)
Yeah, I get the feed in 50# bags and then put it in gallon ziplocks to keep bugs out and to make it easier on my disabled body to fill feeders, so I don't have the bag anymore. But I feed Purina brand medicated chick starter/grower.

I have 2 more chicks that are younger so will keep feeding the medicated for now but once they are 18 weeks I will switch to non-medicated all flock or layer crumbles from here on out. Even if I have to toss a little of the medicated.

Though the old hen likes the starter more than the layer stuff

Thanks, I will probably just collect them for a while before scrambling them. They are such tiny eggs.

First time chicken mama (Mommy Roo) and find myself hesitant/nervous to eat the first eggs that our Orpingtons and Australorps are starting to produce. Is this common or am I really goofy???
No, I was scared at first too. 😂 I was the only one who’d eat it. It was carrot-orange compared to the store eggs. 😂
