In May of 2010 the city council voted no for a chicken ordinance in Eau Claire. They wanted 5 hens and approval of a percentage of the neighbors.

In the last few months people have been pushing for a new 2 year trial ordinance which would give out only 20 permits tops and 6 hens allowed. Now the negative publicity was bad a year ago and yet again it is bad in the Leader Telegram. The day the council voted in 2010 the Opinion page was dedicated to all chicken opinions. Some were just outragouse and to my eyes unbelievable. Again this year the Opinion page was pretty negative. But one person who had a yarn to spin last year did an even (better) job this year.

Now tell me if you believe this? Because I dont.

"No, no and No! We have had a taste nof chickens in the city a year or so ago. A neighbor (over a blck away) had chickens, and at times we could hear and smell them. Then two or three got loose and moved into our woods and yards. We even had police here one day, because it was reported thatwe had chickens in our front yard. The police went to the home, and I'm not sure what took place after that, but we no longer hear or smell chickens."(heres the kicker) "The loose chickens used sandboxes, bird and squirrel feeders, our sidewalks and a neighbor's pool."

    Here is another one.

" Novice urban farmersagain approach the city fathers. council members, give these amateurs a harsh slap on the roost and insist that hensforth, neighbors will be free of the incessant cackling emanating from the leaky seams of poorly sealed chicken coops. It will all depend on what caulk a dude'll do..."

Oh, geez. That sounds a little nutty. The neighbor's pool? Are there no pro-chicken people out there dispelling such myths? Oakland (Bay Area, CA) is going through a really intense battle over urban farming, people get very heated over this stuff. Wish I had some sage wisdom, but just have moral support. [IMG]

You would think in California the people would be a little more forward looking. [IMG]

If it makes you feel any better, there was an animal rights activist who came to our last city council meeting with a bunny (that was terrified to be in a crowded room of so many people), and compared urban farmers to Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction (boiling pet bunnies). [IMG]

Anything we can do to help swing the tide in favor of chickens in Eau Claire?

I live just outside of Eau Claire now. But I just hate the way the newspaper opinion page portrays things. You can pretty much tell what they think about the situation.
