Sweet Jane (my red star hen) is egg bound. It has been 26 hours since I discovered her in this condition. She can hardly walk, only peeing a very fowl smelling yuck, not really pooping. She is hunched up with her tail down. She will not sit down. Eating and drinking but sleeping a lot. I have given her warm soapy bath soaks, injected a little bit of olive oil in her vent, rubbed some vaseline on her vent, gave her a little bit of olive oil in her food. She's inside where she is warm and away from the other chickens. What else can I do? I held her upside down and she threw up quite a bit up nasty smelling stuff. After I did that, she perked up but still can't walk or sit. Suggestions please!!

Okay, so I need a little more information. Is the egg broken inside her, or is it intact. Also, don't hold her upside down again as that can upset her and start to reverse the process. If the egg is broke, you have to manually remove it. Its going to be uncomfortable for you and painful and upsetting for the bird. If the egg is intact, then after a few hours if its still not out then it also has to be VERY CAREFULLY removed. Hope I helped a little.

no the egg is not broke. i can only see a large swollen area, i can't see an egg nor have i felt inside for one. i read that i shouldn't do that for fear of breaking the egg. she seems pretty calm.

If I remember, heat helps.... try placing her in a warm bath or on a hot water bottle to try & get things moving.

You need to give her some calcium--a crushed Tums or 2, a calcium tablet, liquid calcium, or whatever you have. Then you do need to glove up, and insert a lubricated finger into the vent 1 1/2 inches to feel for an egg. At the same time take your other hand and feel her lower belly. If there is an egg, a warm bath in the sink for 30 minutes may help relax her to lay the
    egg. Here's a link:

I'm beginning to think something else must be wrong. Still no egg but she seems swollen and has very runny stinky pee. No poop. She seems to be eating and drinking ok. I don't know what else to do for her.
