my chickens have just started laying, so we put a nest box in their coop. I've read that you can put golf balls in the nest box to encourage hens to lay there, but the golf balls are white, and my hen's eggs are very dark brown. does that matter?

I don't think it really matters. My chickens don't seem to care that I use colored easter eggs (like purple and green ones), even though they lay brown eggs.

I've heard of people using light bulbs as egg decoys with good results. I also recall reading a post here by another member who's hen went broody on a lemon. It's amazing what you can get a chicken to believe [IMG] I've used golf balls to show my hens where to lay and to keep broody hens sitting and it worked very well.
