Our Olive Egger laid her first egg today... she actually laid two! While watching her in the coop cam, she looked so calm and was still tossing bedding on her back. Within 5 minutes, she reached back and pecked one of the eggs! I rushed into her run with treats and called her as soon as I saw. She ran out of the coop with yolk covered egg shell still in her beak! She dropped it quickly for some mealworms but my heart sank... I’ve read about how egg-eating is almost impossible to break and we all love her so much; culling her is definitely not an option. We cleaned up the broken egg and my husband is frantically building a new nest box that will allow the eggs to roll-away. I feel really bad that I didn’t immediately collect the eggs but then again, we can’t be home all the time watching their coop cam. Do any of you have success stories you can share about breaking this habit?

Thank you for your reply. She’s the first in our flock to lay and we have wooden eggs in there already.
