Eggs are here :)Paganbirds and MagsC's hatching thread!!UpdateMarch16!

I'll try to get some pics after the next chick hatches. It's really hard to get good pics in a cabinet 'bator - the chicks hide at the back!

Ok. So I woke up this morning and the other egg had hatched.
White silkie!

I had another egg that had pipped.
Uh Oh. Crusty egg yolk all around the (rather large) pip.
I know, I know... I said I wouldn't help. But... but.... I helped.
I don't know how that chick had made it through the night. It had yolk glued to its beak... which was glued to its wing... which was glued to the shell. It took me about a half hour & 2 washcloths to get that chick out and half-way clean!
It was no problem, other than the yolk. The veins were all dried in the membrane. The remainder of the yolk sac was absorbed. It was only stuck due to a ill-aimed pip. That's when I don't mind helping.
Splash Silkie!

Pics to come when I get the horses watered & the yolky chick dries off a bit. I put it back in the 'bator to fluff up.

Ok... so here are my first pics.

The big one is a salmon faverolle. it has 8 & 1/2 toes.

LOL! Too cute!
The two little ones are silkies... or sizzles... not sure yet.
The first to hatch is definitely white. The 2nd one, I thought was a splash. I'm thinking it may be blue, though, now that it's drying a bit.

All three chicks:

No more pips. I'll give them until tonight, then the other shelf moves down to the hatcher. 20 LF eggs, a S/S, and a cochin. 22 eggs.

Congrats!!!

I am glad you have at least three chicks out of this!!
I agree with you about the helping thing, sometimes the membranes are dried out or it pips in the wrong place etc. etc.
I dont help if they dont at least pip unless, okay, I have when one was really squeaking up a storm!!
Beautiful pics!!!!!!!!!!!

I havent been on much today...there is a ghost hunters marathon on Syfy, lol.

Yay for the fav!! That's weird about the toes, I've seen one or two with less than ideal spacing, but they've all had 10! lol I'm glad you got one though!! Keeping fingers crossed for the 2nd set!

I don't mind the toe count!
My current SF girl has 9 toes. I love her anyway! LOL!
Here's the little half-toe on one foot:

Isn't it cute!
I'm thinking it's gonna be a roo... something about the attitude. LOL!
This chick has a big personality - and a lot of attitude.
Not to mention the cute factor... I love fluffy faces.
I think this next hatch will go much better. I've cleaned out the bator shelves & changed the sponges & water containers. I haven't lost any more embryos since I got rid of that last batch. I'm down to 4 ducklings, but the remaining 4 embryos look strong.
It seems the shipped eggs took the worst of the bacterial infection... if that's what caused all these problems.
I've never had anything like this happen before.
I'm really excited that I'm hatching more of your SFs, CloverLeaf. This set will incubate perfectly. I'm sure of it. (I hope!)

MagsC - it's lockdown for you, too, tonight, isn't it?
I went ahead & locked down this morning before I went to bed. I did an egg-topsy on the eggs that didn't hatch. They were all fully formed silkies (and 1 SF) that hadn't even pipped the aircell. Silkies:3 whites, a blue, a black , and (I think) a splash. The only thing I noted that was odd is that 2 of the chicks were positioned incorrectly. (One I had to search for it's head... it was "breech.") Another weird thing is that all of the yolks were broken and yolk was floating under the membrane.
What would make the yolks break before the chicks hatch & drown them?
I'm guessing that this is what happened to my chick that made it. It was covered in yolk & still has a crusty face... I didn't want to risk getting water in it's nostrils to un-crust it's face. That chick is also very small & skinny. I can only assume that there was more yolk on the outside than the inside of the chick.
I just hope it never happens again.

Yes, I believe lockdown is tonight....though since mine went in just a tad bit later, they might possibly hatch later? I am going to do one last turning tonight before lockdown.
I am nervous and hoping everything goes okay! Thats weird on the eggtopsies.

How are your babies this morning??

Well, other than the helped chick, they're doing great!
The runt is ok, too, but requiring a lot of attention. I taped (her?) feet this morning because they were very curled from being stuck to the shell. She kept falling down, so I untaped one foot.
I had to soak her bottom. It was still crusty from yolk & she couldn't poo.
She's pretty happy now... sitting in my sweatshirt while I type.
I think she'll be fine after a few days.

How's the runt doing?
My eggs, like yours, are on lockdown now.

If I even get two babies I will be happy. I have had a loner before and always feel sorry for them.

I candled silkie/sizzle, silkie and salmon faverolle cross eggs that are due the 25th.(If I am adding it correctly, lol)
I had one very small temp spike for about an hour so hope that didnt affect that but when I candled, so far I have nothing to toss.
Of course it have not even been a week.
