Well we have gotten moved and are still unpacking and two of my girls have started laying. Now they are still in my portable hot tub frame so I immediately ran to husband with egg in hand and said "Dear time to start the coop...we are OUT of time!" DD has named the coop "Eggtopia" and so it shall be, besides I like the name too. So, DH, an extended family member and a friend sat down and began planning my coop. MY coop not THEIR coop MINE MINE MINE....but, they finally came up with a 12' x 12' coop that is being built as if it it Fort Knox (for security) and a Castle (for defense). This is what happens when you have two retired green berets and one former marine building a coop. I even overheard discussion of a mine field and booby traps on the perimeter...I left the room at that point! So, 9, yes 9 concrete pillars were placed down and tested by the DD jumping up and down on them. Then began the preparations for the floor joists and flooring. The plan: pressure treated 4 x 4's on the concrete pillars to level the floor frame area and 2 x 6's for frame and joists, with 2 x 4 cross bracing. And marine grade 1" plywood for the floor. Joists being set into place.... The plywood going down .... the discussion of how wonderful they are and how great the coop will be, what kind of flooring inside, what type of roofing material and blah blah.... I can only begin to imagine what the walls will be framed with at this point. I have given up discussing it with them and told them "Build the coop, make it secure and protect my girls". I listen to their discussions and hear things like "Well we could use 9 gauge chain link for the run and welded wired cloth on the inside... heck that would keep a bear locked up so it should keep one OUT!" or "I think the girls need skylights so they have the morning sun coming in for them" or "I think the girls will need this or that" These are the moments I leave the room or area. I will update as progress continues.
