I have a 3 year old hen who I discovered this morning seemed to be weak, and not walking normally. She had her tail pointing down, and was walking very low to the ground like she was almost scooting along. She can get up and hold her tail correctly, but soon goes back to this tail down position. I picked her up and she is very thin so this must have been going on for some time before it was noticed. Her behind was pretty crusty so I soaked her in warm water and got her cleaned up. I put her in her own pen and she won't eat or drink so far. I also noticed that her abdomen close to her behind is swollen but not hard. It feels like there is a lot of liquid in there. Do you think she is egg bound? I would appreciate any advice as I've never seen this before.

    Thank you! Amy~

Could be an internal layer. Can you feel an egg? Can you have a fecal sample read for parasites?

I can't feel an egg. She is very swollen underneath but not near her vent- more underneath. Feels like she is full of liquid like a water balloon. I don't know of a vet in my area that will see chickens, but I will give that a try. I just can't imagine what is wrong. Everyone else seems just fine.

Now that I've researched a bit, I think you are right. What do I do now? I think, if that's what is wrong she may die anyway.
