Hi, My 8 week old Gmbels Quail is recovering from an impacted crop. Today I noticed the feathers at back of neck were Parting funny when she would bend her neck down. I looked closer and her bones are exposed. She is not acting like she is in any pain. Still wanting to eat veraciously. (She is on a strict diet to help impaction.) It was quite startling as this is my first bird. Let alone quail. WHat is going on? And can I mend this at home. Very frightning to see.

Hi!
I don’t know how to treat this but I do know that pictures of the wound will definitely help me and others help you

No predators. She has been indoors and in her hospital cage. I just found it. She had an impacted crop so i thought maybe the skin pulled forward from all the extra weight/size? Will post pics if I can get her to sit still long enough to get a good pic. Still have her on her liquid diet as I dont want to compound the situation.

Will post better picks. It looks like it goes almost a the way around. She is itching at it now and trying to peck so this is not making matters better. Do they make a "cone" for birds. I Can't put a wrap on neck I don't want to choke her.

So what I can see it doesn’t look bloody or super inflamed... is it though?
No thats the thing... No blood. It is getting a bit crusty. I was wondering if her crop could have been swollen from her thyroid? Maybe goiter? And then the pressure from the swelling could have caused this? I am going to start antibiotics and am giving her a bit of garlic in her mash now. This is the wierdest thing.

Also cleaned area with iodine solution. Im trying not to get it wet as Im not sure how open it is. Or if any fluid could get in her air sacs? This is all new to me and I am very appreciative for the help. The vet said oh we can see her on saturday and No exotic vet at the 24 hr place... So im trying to do whatever I can until I can get her to doc.
