Hi there! I've been thinking of raising a pair of Emu, breeding or otherwise, as sex of the pair is of no concern as long as at least one of them is female, for egg laying purposes... I have raised lots of birds in the past, but recently my last remaining Black Star hen passed, and I cant bring myself to buy any more chickens, so I think turning over a new leaf with a different bird may be beneficial. I have enough space for the two birds, ranging on one and half acres, it's entirely fenced, and I've done extensive research on how to care for such animals. Currently, my only setback is, where the heck do I find some hatching eggs? There are a few emu ranches nearby but they refuse to sell hatching eggs or any birds, chicks or otherwise, at all, and the only places I know of that sell large-bird eggs nearby is an ostrich farm down town from where I live, but ostriches, I've heard, are ornery things. Every other place I've contacted has referred me to a farm up in Pennsylvania, but id rather not risk egg breakage when they're so expensive to purchase. Is there anybody who breeds emu or rhea nearby? Even in neighboring states?
