    Hi
    One of my 2 year chickens has an enlarged rear end; her body has sagged right down; it is quite a big lump; she lays down more, has not laid an egg for probably 9 months or so; eats and drinks okay, but lays down a lot and by herself. Can anyone tell me what this is?
    Thanks

    Hi
    It's seems to me that there is an egg to large to come out this happens quite reguarly in older hens but some times occurs in younger ones too, there also might be a build up of eggs too.
    It's called egg bound.
    There is limited things you can do.
    Causes:
    To heavy/fat
    lack of calcium
    Dehydrated.
    What you can do:
    You can prick it with a large syringe and suck out all the fluid in the egg usaully the egg shell will collapse and the hen will pass it through in a couple of hours or days, This can be done by you or proffessional.
    HOW EVER THERE IS A RISK;
    One risk with this treatment is that it is possible that a sharp edge of shell may cut the uterus.
    You could take her to the vet too.
    Hope this helps
    Brittany
