Strange Looking Egg:
Oops, it posted the wrong photo:
And here is what the end looks like:
Yep, just last week in fact, from my Welsummer. Looks like an extra thick layer of bloom.
Thanks for the reply. Does it signify an illness? What is "bloom?" I'll research it. Is your Welsummer doing okay?
Bloom is the protective coating put on the egg as it is laid. The egg comes out wet and dries in seconds. Not sure if these funky eggs signal illness; my hen has other, shall we say, psychological issues. There is a thread somewhere full of weird egg pics just like yours.
What do you mean by psychological issues? Is she a broody type?
Ah I wish it was just broodiness! No, she is a stargazer. But she still lays a couple times a week, dark speckly eggs. This is a thread about her condition. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=510636
What a pretty girl she is! I had never heard of Stargazing before. Thanks for the interesting post. She is lucky to have you to look out for her and love her.
Was this the thread you were talking about, or are there some others?:
