Thanks to some good fortune and a little bartering I have everything I need to be a chicken keeper, well everything but the hens. That's about to change very soon though. It has been illegal in most of the city of Jacksonville, Fl. until just recently when a new ordinance was passed setting up a pilot program for 300 people to raise backyard hens. The rules are very specific and you have to take a class at the local extension office but the total cost of the class and permit is only $30. I'm on the schedule to take the class next week so I should be getting my permit sometime shortly thereafter. I plan on a flock of 4 or 5 buff orpingtons for fresh eggs. Can't wait.
